» MSU Financial Aid

Did you know that you can answer the majority of your MSU financial aid questions from the comfort of your Michigan State University Apartment? It’s true! All you have to do is tune into these videos posted online by MSU Financial Aid TV

MSU Financial Aid TV covers the basics like:
Who’s eligible?
What is a plus loan?
What is the difference between a subsidized and an unsubsidized loan?
What is a Master Promissory Note?
What is a Grad PLUS loan?
What is a Perkins Loan?

I highly recommend this web site to anyone that is confused with the financial aid process. Me and my roommates in my MSU student apartment use this site all the time to help answer our financial aid questions and it helps us know that we are filling out the forms correctly.

I hope that you find this tool as helpful as I did. If you follow these tips in the videos you will save yourself a lot of time going back and forth from your MSU apartment and campus.

The only utility bill you pay is your gas and electric, which you pay directly to Consumer’s Energy.

7. Is parking available?
Yes! We give one parking permit per resident. As far as guests go, don’t worry! It’s as simple as coming into the office and picking up a guest parking pass (which are free of charge of course). Your guests are allowed to stay for a maximum of 5 days.

8. What do I need to hook up my computer to the Internet?
All that is needed to connect to the Internet is an Ethernet cable which may be purchased at most electronic stores. That’s it! It’s that simple!

» We Love the 90′s

I was sitting in my MSU student apartment last night surfing the web when I came across retrojunk.com. This web site is awesome! You have to check it out. It lists all your favorite things that you forgot you loved about the 90′s. Do you remember watching the cartoon Doug? It was one of my favorites. If I was given a DVD collector series of the cartoon Doug, I would have a movie marathon in my East Lansing student apartment right now.

Or what about the TV series, Are You Afraid of the Dark? I remember watching Are You Afraid of the Dark every Saturday night as a kid growing up. And the funniest part is at the time I thought it was soo scary! I watched a clip of the show on retrojunk.com and I just laughed at how silly I was for thinking that show was scary.

Some of my other TV show favorites from the 90′s are: Sailor Moon, Salute Your Shorts, Tiny Toons, Hey Arnold, Power Rangers and Captain Planet. Those shows I grew up on. You have to take a minute out of your busy day in your MSU apartment and check out the video collection of the 90′s. It will bring you back.

What do you and your roommates love about the 90′s?

- Julie

» Best Places in East Lansing to get a Caesar Salad

Caesar Salad Fever! Caesar salads are one of my favorite salads to order in the summer time. Below are my top 5 places to get a Caesar salad near your East Lansing student apartment:
1. Cosi
2. Champps
3. Applebees
4. Jimmy’s Pub
5. Chili’s

If you worried about the price of your delicious Caesar salad your cheapest option is Jimmy’s pub! It is surrounded by a great atmosphere and located right behind the Chandler Crossing Apartments.

A nice zingy salad is found at Chili’s with a peppery feel it is not like the rest. It had a signature taste at a fair price.

Applebee’s offers a Caesar salad as a part of their two dinner combo which could be a deal for a date! And, the pick two combo is perfect for a student budget.

Champps offers the largest salad out of the bunch, so come hungry. You will be shocked when you see the size of this salad!

Let me know what you think of all of these delicious salads! I hope you enjoy some of my favorites.

» Spartan Basketball and Chris Allen Part Ways

I know that we at least 3 months away from the start of Midnight Madness for the Michigan State Men’s Basketball Team, but that did not stop the Spartans from making headlines this week.  In a press statement, MSU head coach Tom Izzo announced that shooting guard/small forward Chris Allen will not be returning to the Spartans for his senior season.  In the press release, Izzo announced that Allen “failed to meet all of the obligations” presented to him during the off season.  His spot on the team had been in question due to issues with his academic performance and conduct off of the court.

Allen has the opportunity to transfer schools for his senior season.  If he transfers to another Division I school, he would have to sit out the upcoming basketball season.   He would have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2011-2012 season.  If he goes to lower division school, he will have the opportunity to play this upcoming season.

Chris Allen’s presence on the team will be sorely missed on a Spartan team that hopes to make it to its third consecutive Final Four.  Allen was arguably the teams best outside shooter and perimeter defender.  With his threat as a shooter, he created driving lanes for Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and Korie Lucious.  Without him in the lineup, teams might be more likely to double team in the post or on drives to the basket without the threat of an outside shooter.  Also, in a league that features strong shooting guards like E’Twaun Moore of Purdue, David Lightly and William Buford of Ohio State, and Demetri McCamey of Illinois, Chris Allen’s on the ball defense will be missed.  Durrell Summers, Mike Kebler, Austin Thornton, and others must set up defensively to lessen the impact of losing Allen.  Look for freshmen Keith Appling and Russell Byrd to play a larger role for the team in their first season.

Allen averaged 8.2 points a game for the Spartans while shooting almost 40% from the 3 point line for the Spartans last season.  The entire Spartan community wishes him good luck in his future endeavors. This season is going to be interesting to watch from your Michigan State University apartment.

Do you think Allen’s lost will hurt the Spartans in the win and lost column?  What do you and your roommates think in your MSU student apartment? Let your voice be heard!

- Shaun

» Best Best Back to School Laptops

It’s that time again… time for college students around that nation to flock back to campus. And, if you are anything like me you desperately need a new lap top to bring to college this fall. But when you are shopping for a laptop where do you start?  There are so many options! Hopefully this list published by Forbes.com can help you find the best back to school laptops. Here’s the list:

MacBook
Price: $849 and up
Weight: 5 pounds
Thickness: 1.08 inches

Apple’s entry-level notebook is a lot costlier than other companies’ cheapest laptops–and it’s also a whole lot more capable. You’re never going to wonder if this machine is able to tackle the tasks a modern laptop is expected to handle, from editing multimedia clips to crunching numbers and putting together classroom presentations. If you can’t decide on a laptop, get this one.

Dell Inspiron 15
Price: $379 and up
Weight: 5.6 pounds
Thickness: 1.02 to 1.48 inches

For a laptop with a full-sized keyboard and a 15.6-inch display, the price on this machine is very nice. Don’t be afraid to load up on options. Add a respectable Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of random-access memory and a beefy 500 GB hard drive, and this machine can still be had for just $599.

HP Pavilion dm4t
Price: $729.99 and up
Weight: 4.4 pounds

Hewlett-Packard offers a bewildering array of notebook options. It’s hard to go wrong with the HP Pavilion dm4t, however. It’s not HP’s cheapest thin-and-light model, but it packs plenty of power and value into a machine that weighs 4.4 pounds and is less than an inch thick. Plus it’s super easy to transport to and from your MSU student apartment. Specify a model with Intel’s 2.26 GHz Core i5-430M Dual Core processor, 4 GB of random access memory, a 500 GB hard drive and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 graphics card, and you’ll still pay just $908.99.

Asus U30Jc
Price: $849.99 and up
Weight: 4.8 pounds
Thickness: 1.2 inches

You’ll pay more, both in money and weight, for a notebook that can play the latest video games. This laptop, however, keeps the cost of putting some gaming action onto its 13-inch screen surprisingly low. Intel’s Core i3-350M processor packs a decent amount of power into this relatively small machine. The real magic, however, is this machine can turn its Nvidia discrete graphics processor on for a bit of gaming and turn off the rest of the time, conserving battery life. If you are a gamer like me, you will love playing games on this computer from your East Lansing student apartment.

HP Mini 311 Netbook
Price: $359 and up
Weight: 3.26 pounds
Thickness: 1.2 inches

It’s hard not to love netbooks. They’re thin, they’re light, they’re cheap. The drawback: The cheaper options often lack real computing punch. The HP 311 offers a good deal more than you’ll find on the cheapest netbooks. It packs a Nvidia Ion graphics chip along with Intel’s Atom netbook processor, giving this notebook more oomph than a typical netbook. The 11.6-inch screen and bigger keyboard also makes this much more comfortable for regular use. This might be a good option for a student who is lugging a desktop computer to school with them, and wants something portable for the classroom.

For the complete list visit forbes.com

Majority of these laptops can be purchased from Best Buy which is less than 5 miles from your East Lansing apartment. I hope this list makes your back to school shopping a little easier!

» One Book, One Community at Michigan State University

Have you heard about East Lansing’s One Book, One Community? Well… Let me tell you all about it if you don’t know already. One Book, One Community is a community program sponsored by East Lansing and Michigan State University that encourages community members to read the same book at the same time. You know, just like Oprah’s book club. The book is also assigned to incoming Freshman at Michigan State University but all students are encouraged to read it.

This year the book selected is Dave Eggers’ “Zeitoun”. The book is retells the true story of one man’s struggle to survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina amidst the chaos that overtook New Orleans. Now, I am usually not a big reader but I picked up this book to see what the hype was all about and I ended up reading the book in 4 hours in my East Lansing Student Apartment. It was soo good!

MSU and City of East Lansing has a series of events coming up to celebrate the One Book, One Community event. Here are a list of the events that are super close to your MSU apartment that you will not want to miss:

Meet the Author
Community members can meet Dave Eggers as he kicks off the month-long OBOC program on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing High School auditorium. He will also welcome freshmen at the MSU Academic Welcome at the Breslin Student Events Center on Monday, Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. Community members are welcome.

Community and Campus Events
A series of community and campus events will take place around the themes in Zeitoun, Aug. 29 through Sept. 30.

Zeicussion  and Writing Workshops
Registration is required for two OBOC events. Beginning Aug. 2, community members can register for “Zeicussion: An Interactive Book Discussion” by calling (517) 351-2420 or registering online and a “Writing Workshop led by MSU Professor Anita Skeen – The Way I Remember It” by calling (517) 351-2420.

Photo Contest
OBOC is sponsoring a photo contest to capture an array of images inspired by the themes presented in “Zeitoun.” Community members are encouraged to participate regardless of photographic expertise. The grand prize winner will receive an iPad and the first place winner in each category will receive a signed copy of “Zeitoun.” All submissions must be received by Sept.19, 2010.

If you haven’t already read the book, I encourage you to do so! It was a great book to read in the comfort of my MSU student apartment! Are there any other fans out there?

Joanna
