Hey there hockey fans! Don’t forget to make your way down to the Joe Louis Arena for the ultimate showdown between Michigan and Michigan State hockey this weekend. Known as Michigan Hockey Day, this Saturday, January 30th the two rivals will battle at The Joe at 7:30pm. This is an awesome tradition that allows fans from all over to join in on the college hockey fun, but in the fun atmosphere of The Joe Louis Arena.
I personally have been to a few of their games there and the crowd is just overwhelming! It is like watching hockey in a football stadium! I loved the Spartan Pride that MSU fans brought, and the talent of both teams always makes for a great game.
Tickets are on sale online through websites like www.ticketmaster.com, or you can get student tickets by clicking here. They are fairly inexpensive, just about $12 per person.
Prefer to watch it from your MSU apartment? Catch the game on FSN Detroit. For students living at Chandler Crossings apartments, check it out on channel 27, or at CBSSports.com on the Game Tracker.
GO GREEN!

If you are apart of the Michigan State community, you have undoubtedly heard the controversy surrounding the impending new MSU logo. If you have not, let me quickly get you up to speed so you can share the news with your roommate in your MSU student apartment.
Recently, a new Michigan State Spartan logo appeared on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website. A day later, MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis and other officials confirmed that the logo change is a part of a “comprehensive brand and identity project” to be unveiled in April. The logo switch is what an internal memo called “the result of a two year collaboration between MSU Athletics and a team of top designers from Nike.” The logo (as seen) seems to display an angrier looking design than the previous one. The Detroit Lions, last year, also made a switch to an “angrier looking” logo.
Reaction to the new logo has stirred up a lot of interest in Spartan Nation. Most of the opinions about the impending switch have been negative. The State News recently polled readers about what they thought about the change. An overwhelming 94% of people who participated in the polls preferred the old logo to the new one. In the majority of the blog entries, newspaper articles and editorials that I read called the new logo an “assault on tradition,” “a lost of Spartan pride and identity,” or a function of Nike greed.
When it comes to the tradition point, those upset Spartans have a valid argument. When the logo is changed, it will most likely replace the old logo on the sides of the MSU football helmet. There are few sports that can compare to the tradition of college football. By changing the helmet, some MSU fans feel that they would be losing some of the tradition. Some might argue that you do not see the school’s biggest football rivals (Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State) changing uniforms, do we? If we want to be like those traditional football powers, we keepp the traditions (and thus the look) of what made us great.
Since specifics of this agreement between Nike and MSU has sparse, some fear that Nike will own the right to this new Spartan logo. That has made local retailers of Spartan apparel nervous. Instead of dealing with MSU, they might have to deal with Nike to make sure they can get the latest Spartan gear on their shelves. Also consider all of the local business around here (i.e. Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe, for example) that may have to change their Spartan logos to match the University’s logo.
It is obvious that MSU and Nike have some type of financial agreement when it comes to this redesign. In an argument for the switch, do not forget that MSU and the Athletic Department have a lot of bills to pay. With higher coaches salaries, building and faculty expansions, and 20 varsity sports to support, a lot of times the costs can outweigh the available revenue outlets. Such a deal with Nike can only help the University’s bottom line.
What do you think? Where are you on this issue? Poll your roommates in your MSU apartment and let us know.

In response to the earthquake that hit Haiti last week and the damaging after shock, Michigan State Students are coming together to help the cause. As you have heard on the news, hundreds of thousands have been affected by this tragedy. Many have lost their family members and their homes have been left in ruins. This unfortunate event has caused suffering for many families, including children who have no food, water or medical supplies that they so desperately need. These innocent people truly need help in any form that it can be provided. If you would like to make a donation to help the relief efforts click here for a list of organizations or stop by any Chandler Crossings location. Show your Spartan Pride and represent our community by stepping up and helping people in need. Together we can make a difference!

There is no denying that MTV’s Jersey Shore is incredibly entertaining but do you feel that it represents you as an adult in your twenties? Does it represent you as an Italian American? Does it represent you as an American in general? This are just a few questions my friends and I pondered one night in our East Lansing Apartment.
My friends and I have discussed the show while watching it in our MSU apartment, and mostly talk about how ridiculous JWOWW, Snookie or the other cast members behave. On one hand MTV is simply capitalizing on people who love attention. On the other hand is the trend of wild, over sexual young adults changing our cultural norms?
What do you think?

This is my puppy Chandler! He is a boxer/husky mix
As a proud mommy of a 11 month old pup, I know a lot about puppy toys! My little guy, Chandler is a ball of energy and requires a lot of toys and exercise. Living at my Chandler Crossings apartment is really convenient because there are so many parks nearby. I have tried a ton of different toys, and even though they say “indestructible” that isn’t always the case. Before you go out and spend a lot of money on dog toys, you should read reviews because you aren’t likely to get a refund if your little one doesn’t like their new toy.
Here are a few that Chandler loves:
The Kong!- This is a very durable rubber toy that has an opening so you can stuff it full of treats or food. Since you might have to leave them home alone for a while, this is a yummy treat that will keep them occupied for a while. You can even stick it in the freezer to make it like a Popsicle!
A rope- dogs love to tug! It is a natural instinct of theirs and playing tug is good exercise for both of you! Plus, if you search around your MSU student apartment I am sure you can find a rope like object lying around that you can use.
A ball- many dogs love to play fetch and it is a great way for them to use up their energy. I found a really cool ball at the local pet store that is great for fetch, but big enough to play tug with too. It is called the Holee-roller, its made out of durable rubber and it is one of the few toys that has lasted me a while. Check it out here.
-Interactive toys- I found a really cool dog bone that is rubber and has hollow ends where you put in small dog treats or pieces of food. It is a good way to keep them occupied because it is a challenge to get the treats out.
-Bones! Puppies like to chew, and bones are good for their teeth because it keeps them clean. It is better to keep a bone available to your dog so they are less likely to pick up those expensive shoes sitting in your MSU apartment!
Things to avoid:
-Small objects that dogs can easily choke on.
-Toys with stuffing in them, especially if you have a dog that likes to chew- they just won’t last.
-Expensive toys. Trust me, even if it says “indestructible” your dog will find a way to ruin it!

East Lansing has the perfect atmosphere for sports events, whether it be collegiate or pro, you can almost always find any big game at a variety of locations. Here are a few of my favorite places to catch the big game with my pals that is right by your MSU apartment.
Buffalo Wild Wings- right off of Albert Street. This is always a great choice for the best wings in town, and an awesome atmosphere! BW’s gets pretty packed on big games though, so make sure you get there early to reserve your table.
The Post- This is one of my favorite places in East Lansing anyways, but it is also a cool place to hang out during game time. The Post has several flat screen TVs and is a little bit quieter of a venue so you can actually hear the game. Don’t forget to order some of their good food and drinks!
Champs- located right in the Eastwood Towncentre. The food is delicious and they can accommodate large groups of people. Once again, they get really busy on game days so it is good to plan ahead! Plus, it’s super close to your East Lansing student apartment.
Jimmy’s Pub-Also very conveniently located next to Chandler Crossings apartments, and it is smoke-free! I love the food, and the patio is a great summer hang out.
I love sports, and food so East Lansing is a great place to have the best of both worlds! What are your favorite game-day venues?

On a college budget, finding the cash to treat your boyfriend or girlfriend can be quite a challenge. That being said, the dinner and a movie date doesn’t have to die with rising prices. Introducing, for Michigan State Student’s pleasure, (cue the drum roll, please!) a new date concept: Tuesday is the new Friday:
As students, we don’t have a five star salary, so we can’t afford five star restaurants. We can, however, afford a quality meal from time to time. Applebee’s has a fantastic special going on now called “2 for $20”. For $20.00, you and your date can share an appetizer and two full size entrées. How does spinach and artichoke dip sound to start? Then follow it with your choice of twelve items such as a 7 oz. sirloin steak and the three-cheese chicken penne pasta? Normally, this meal would cost approximately $28.00. Blogger Amount Saved: $8.00.
At East Lansing’s NCG Cinemas, movie tickets are only $5.00 any time during the entire day. On your typical Friday date night; these tickets can be as high at $8.50 per person. Blogger Amount Saved: $7.00.
Think of it this way, by saving the $15.00, you’ve paid for half of your date next week!
Happy Date Night East Lansing!
-Ryan Shaul
