Have you heard about East Lansing’s One Book, One Community? Well… Let me tell you all about it if you don’t know already. One Book, One Community is a community program sponsored by East Lansing and Michigan State University that encourages community members to read the same book at the same time. You know, just like Oprah’s book club. The book is also assigned to incoming Freshman at Michigan State University but all students are encouraged to read it.
This year the book selected is Dave Eggers’ “Zeitoun”. The book is retells the true story of one man’s struggle to survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina amidst the chaos that overtook New Orleans. Now, I am usually not a big reader but I picked up this book to see what the hype was all about and I ended up reading the book in 4 hours in my East Lansing Student Apartment. It was soo good!
MSU and City of East Lansing has a series of events coming up to celebrate the One Book, One Community event. Here are a list of the events that are super close to your MSU apartment that you will not want to miss:
Meet the Author
Community members can meet Dave Eggers as he kicks off the month-long OBOC program on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing High School auditorium. He will also welcome freshmen at the MSU Academic Welcome at the Breslin Student Events Center on Monday, Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. Community members are welcome.
Community and Campus Events
A series of community and campus events will take place around the themes in Zeitoun, Aug. 29 through Sept. 30.
Zeicussion and Writing Workshops
Registration is required for two OBOC events. Beginning Aug. 2, community members can register for “Zeicussion: An Interactive Book Discussion” by calling (517) 351-2420 or registering online and a “Writing Workshop led by MSU Professor Anita Skeen – The Way I Remember It” by calling (517) 351-2420.
Photo Contest
OBOC is sponsoring a photo contest to capture an array of images inspired by the themes presented in “Zeitoun.” Community members are encouraged to participate regardless of photographic expertise. The grand prize winner will receive an iPad and the first place winner in each category will receive a signed copy of “Zeitoun.” All submissions must be received by Sept.19, 2010.
If you haven’t already read the book, I encourage you to do so! It was a great book to read in the comfort of my MSU student apartment! Are there any other fans out there?

If you only watch one show this summer make sure it’s Michigan State University’s student run sitcom, The ShoW! Airing for almost 22 years now, The ShoW is revamping it’s image and quality. Now shooting in HD with an entirely new set the cast and crew are ready to give you a show that will you keeping you wanting more!
In the past The ShoW concentrated on the lives of six underclassmen in Wilson Hall but some of the characters, or ShoWbies, have moved out into East Lansing apartments! MSU’s favorite “horrible” couple Richard and Leslie have taken their relationship to the next level by moving into student housing near MSU together in the new episodes, 75 & 76.
But not only have the characters grown, your options to watch the show have grown as well. You can watch it on MSU’s campus, Sundays at 4:00pm on the RHA channel (channel 11) or you can watch it in the comfort of your own Chandler Crossings apartment on YouTube.
WANT TO MEET THE CAST? WATCH The ShoW Introduction!

They have hands-on activity workshops and celebration of cultural heritage.
The festival encourages cross-cultural understanding of our diverse society through the presentation of musicians, dancers, cooks, storytellers and craftspeople whose traditions are rooted in their communities.
At the festival you can catch nearly 100 musicians or dancers in groups! It’s a really fun way to spend your weekend and it is super close to your East Lansing student apartment.

Bored in your East Lansing student apartment? Why not grab a fishing pole and head to the lake? Believe it or not, East Lansing is actually has a few lakes that are great for fishing.
Here are some of my favorites:
1. Round Lake – Located just north of Chandler Crossings apartments. Round Lake is a small quiet lake with all kinds of fish. My favorite part about Round Lake is MSU students get a discount for renting a small fishing boat with a motor. As a MSU student you will pay only $3.50 per hour. Just this summer along I have large mouth bass, pike, bluegill, crape and dog fish.
2. Lake Lansing – Located in Okemos (about 8 miles from your MSU student apartment). Lake Lansing is actually my favorite place to go ice fishing. In the winter months I always catch something from Lake Lansing. Last winter I caught perch, bluegill, and pike.
3. Hawk Island – Just south MSU campus. Hawk Island is actually an old rock quarry which has been turned into a park that is surrounded by a boardwalk. Hawk Island has the best shore fishing which attracts carp and large mouth bass.
Last but not least, I will leave you with a few fishing tips:
1. Use no line btw 8 pound and 4 pounds.
2. Want a guaranteed bite? Try using spinner bates and crank bates. I catch the most using these bates.
3. Always keep in mind the big bate theory; the bigger the bate the bigger the catch. On the flip side there are less big fish in lakes therefore the quantity you catch is going to be small.
4. Ideal time to go fishing sunset and sunrise. Also, I have good luck when there is a full moon too.
Have fun fishing!
Jake

Do you have younger siblings that you don’t see very often during the school year? I do. I rarely get to spend time with my younger sister, so when I do I try to make sure we can plan something that will be fun for the both of us. Each summer for at least one weekend I invite my sister to stay with me in my Michigan State University Apartment. During this weekend, we ALWAYS head to the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center.
The park isn’t the biggest one I’ve ever been to, but it has plenty of things for an afternoon with your little sib. The park includes, “a 190-foot tube water slide, 140-foot body water slide, splash park, drop slide, diving board, youth frog slide and a number of interactive, water-play structures as well as a wet/dry sand play area, large sunbathing deck, zero-depth pool entry and concession area.”
So, next time you have your younger sibling in your MSU apartment, check it out! Nothing like making some memories!

Do you enjoy live music? How about live music outdoors during a Michigan summer? If you do, I have an event for you that takes place right by your MSU student apartment. From July 12 to July 18, the Common Ground Music Festival returns to Mid-Michigan.
If you are not familiar, Common Ground is a concert series that takes place in downtown Lansing every summer. The festival is located along the banks of the Grand River in Adado Riverfront Park (which is basically on the campus of Lansing Community College). There are two stages set up in the park that have acts performing at the same time. There are also food vendors and outdoor activities to participate in.
Tickets are $32.00 per night of the concert. You can also purchase a week long pass for $99.00. The schedule of acts is below. It is a really cool event because a lot of the performers are national acts. I am going to check out Ludacris and Three 6 Mafia on July 17.
July 12: Buckcherry, Jackyl, Drowning Pool
July 13: Adam Lambert, Orianthi, Allison Iraheta
July 14: Sammy Hagar, Trevor Hall
July 15: Bret Michaels, Cinderella
July 16: Alice Cooper, TESLA
July 17: Lucacris, Three 6 Mafia, WardSkillz w/ BIG PERM, Yung Rich and .KOM
July 18: The Machine performs Pink Floyd with Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Greg Rolie
With a sweet line up like that, spending a night away from your East Lansing Apartment will be well worth it.
Go to www.commongroundfest.com for more information!
