» Michigan vs. Michigan State Hockey Showdown!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Photo from Broadwayworld.com

Hey there hockey fans! Don’t forget to make your way down to the Joe Louis Arena for the ultimate showdown between Michigan and Michigan State hockey this weekend. Known as Michigan Hockey Day, this Saturday, January 30th the two rivals will battle at The Joe at 7:30pm. This is an awesome tradition that allows fans from all over to join in on the college hockey fun, but in the fun atmosphere of The Joe Louis Arena.

I personally have been to a few of their games there and the crowd is just overwhelming! It is like watching hockey in a football stadium! I loved the Spartan Pride that MSU fans brought, and the talent of both teams always makes for a great game.

Tickets are on sale online through websites like www.ticketmaster.com, or you can get student tickets by clicking here. They are fairly inexpensive, just about $12 per person.

Prefer to watch it from your MSU apartment? Catch the game on FSN Detroit. For students living at Chandler Crossings apartments, check it out on channel 27, or at CBSSports.com on the Game Tracker.

GO GREEN!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

In response to the earthquake that hit Haiti last week and the damaging after shock,  Michigan State Students are coming together to help the cause. As you have heard on the news, hundreds of thousands have been affected by this tragedy. Many have lost their family members and their homes have been left in ruins. This unfortunate event has caused suffering for many families, including children who have no food, water or medical supplies that they so desperately need. These innocent people truly need help in any form that it can be provided. If you would like to make a donation to help the relief efforts click here for a list of organizations or stop by any Chandler Crossings location. Show your Spartan Pride and represent our community by stepping up and helping people in need. Together we can make a difference!

» Midnight Madness

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Meijer MadnessWhether you are a wide-eyed freshman or a recently graduated senior who is looking for a job, Midnight Madness is a good thing for you.  I have gone to Midnight Madness at Meijer each year I’ve been here at MSU, and I have a great time every year.

Don’t just think this is for freshmen or newcomers to the university.  Meijer often discounts many of their items for the occasion, so it is a great opportunity to save yourself some money!

Other than the savings it really is a fun event to go to.  They have tables set up outside with hot dogs, pizza, pop, chips, Monster energy drinks, you name it.  A ton of MSU students take CATA buses up here so it feels like a party.

I really enjoy the atmosphere, the free food/drinks, and the savings.  Check it out this year.

The Event is from 8pm-12am on August 31st.  It is held at 2 locations in East Lansing.  The Grand River Meijer by campus and the Meijer on Lake Lansing Road near your MSU apartment.

» Great Lakes Folk Festival

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

folk-festival-large

So I am not sure about any of you, but by this point in the summer my wallet is usually running pretty dry.  Although I generally have a shortage of funds, I don’t want my ability to get out and enjoy the great weather and longer days of summer to be hindered.  Fortunately, there are a lot of fun events happening around East Lansing and MSU’s campus, and the best part?  They’re free.

This weekend August 7-9 check out the Great Lakes Folk Festival presented by the MSU Museum.  It is billed as being a “unique fusion of arts fair, music festival, county fair, multi-ethnic festival, hands-on activity workshops, and celebration of cultural heritage.”  Some of the musical performers include Lost Bayou Rablers (Cajun), Slide (Irish Celtic), Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys (Bluegrass), and Shotgun Party (Western Swing).  There is somthing to suit almost every musical taste and it’s held right in East Lansing.  And don’t forget the food!  There will be regional and ethnic foods like Ethiopian, Hawaiian, Jamaican and more.

Parking will be available in East Lansing, on the MSU campus, and also at commuter lots.

For more information or to volunteer, call the MSU Museum at (517) 432-4533

Hope to see you there!

» MSU Student Discounts

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

On a college budget finding the cash to treat your boyfriend or girlfriend can be quite a challenge. That being said, the dinner and a movie date doesn’t have to die with the rising prices. Introducing, for Michigan State Student’s pleasure, (cue the drum roll) a new date concept: Tuesday is the new Friday.

Cheap dinner and a movie date for MSU students

Cheap dinner and a movie date for MSU students

As students we don’t have a five star salary so most of us can’t afford five star restaurants. We can however, afford a quality meal from time to time. Take Applebee’s for instance. Applebee’s has a fantastic special going on now called “2 for 20″. For $20 bucks you and your date can share an appetizer and two full size entrees. My recommendation go with the spinach and artichoke dip to start. It’s delicious. Next, for your main course you get a choice of twelve different items such as a 7 oz. sirloin stake or three cheese chicken penne pasta (again, a couple of my favorites). Normally this meal would run you approximately $28. Blogger amount saved: $8.00.

Also, on Tuesday (aka the new Friday) East Lansing’s NCG Cinema sells movie tickets for only $5.00 per person with a valid MSU Student ID or School ID. On your typical Friday night date these tickets can be as high as $8.50 per person. Blogger amount saved: $7.00.

Think of it this way, by switching your date night from Friday to Tuesday you can save $15.00. That nearly pays for next week’s date night.

» MSU's Pack Up and Pitch In

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

If you’re leaving East Lansing and heading home for the summer, it’s time to pack up your apartment.  But what do you do with all of your unwanted stuff?   Throw it in the dumpster with all the rest of your trash? Um, no. Recycle?  YES!

MSU is encouraging everyone in East Lansing to “Pack Up and Pitch In” for the second year in a row.  The Pack Up and Pitch In program makes it easy to recycle and donate items that would otherwise get thrown out.

Recycle at MSU. (Image courtesy of OldMainstream)

What they are taking:

* Clothing
* Shoes
* Non-perishable food
* Carpet/rugs
* Electronics
* Sofas
* Mattresses
* Blankets/Pillows
* Household Items
* Anything you’d throw into a recycle bin (boxes, old papers, cans, bottles, etc.)

Pretty sweet deal, huh?

Head over to any residence hall on campus on May 7-8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or drop your goods in the parking lot to the north of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

If you have your student ID, recycling your items will be free.  They will charge you if you have one of those grungy/covered in sheets couches or any other furniture in bad shape. Luckily, it’ll only cost you a whopping $7.50 to get it out of your life forever.

The best part?  Your stuff will either be recycled or donated to orgs such as Lansing Teen Challenge, Volunteers of America and Red Cross.
